Passion Projects provide students with an opportunity to explore their intellectual passions while developing skills and confidence to engage in independent inquiry. These projects not only prepare them for learning at top boarding schools and universities but also help them stand out in the admissions process.

Our talented faculty, comprised of experienced teachers and mentors across disciplines, work closely with select students to explore their individual academic passions. Students interested in Passion Projects must be invited to the program.

Our students have produced research and projects on intellectually stimulating topics, such as:

“The Ownership of Stolen Art” – M.L. (17 years old)
The 20-page research essay investigates stolen artworks throughout history, from the stealing of the Mona Lisa by Vincenzo Peruggia in 1911 to works stolen during the Holocaust. Who owns stolen art? What are the benefits of stolen art? Does ownership really matter?

"Maths and Superhero Reality" - W.H. (12 years old)
Superman, Flash, Spiderman, the Incredibles - these all-time favourite superheroes with acts of unnatural physics have captured our hearts and imagination in a world of fantasy. By combining the student's fascination for these characters, we explored a series of fun and educational applications of scientific and mathematical theories such as Newton's Law and Pythagoras theorems! By looking into the mysteries that we often encounter in film, we bring maths and science alive!

“The Future of Transportation in Shanghai” – A.K. (14 years old)
A.K. tackles the traffic congestion problem in Shanghai through a design thinking project where he worked with an MIT graduate mentor over 5 months. From conducting field research on idle and parked times of cars, to statistical analysis on population growth, pollution and roads design, A.K. developed the idea of “Smart Pods” which is an automated shared car ride system that allows users to call up a “pod” (i.e. automated car) via an app for pick up and passengers traveling to similar destinations are carpooled together.
